The Subway sandwich chain has now more restaurants than McDonald's Corp. and it is now the world's largest restaurant chain, in terms of units.
At the end of the year 2010, Subway had 33,749 restaurants worldwide, compared to McDonald's 32,737. McDonald's is still the leader when it comes to sales thou. The burger chain reported $24 billion in revenue last year.
Companies in this business are looking strongly in to China along with many other companies with other business areas. With China's strong economical growth and big number of costumers, it is most certainly the way to go.
Of course in other countries than China also already has, and will be even more restaurants from Subway and others. Subway, opened its first international restaurant in 1984, in Bahrain. It is also excepting its number of international restaurants to exceed its domestic ones by 2020
Subway has achieved its rapid growth, in part, by opening outlets in non-traditional locations. The attempts by different corporations to go where the costumers are, has for some time been clear trend in many business areas.
Subway only has 199 restaurants in China now, but it expects to have more than 500 by 2015.
Here is some places where Subway has restaurants in the end of the year 2010 but McDonald's have not: Afghanistan, Antigua, Barbados, Bolivia, Bonaire, Cayman Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Iraq, Jamaica, St. Kitts, St. Lucia, St. Martin, St. Vincent, Tanzania.
